Recently, during a recent data project, John Paynter and Mary Beth Hawkins hit a common roadblock in Infinite Campus (IC), the statewide student management system required for all NC public schools. Trying to pinpoint when individual students originally started required referencing five different spreadsheet tabs and cross-referencing year-over-year data.
Recognizing that there had to be a better way, Mary Beth reached out directly to a key contact at NCDPI to see if a streamlined report existed. When it turned out one didn't, the CSP team didn't wait around—they took action.
Collaborating with NCDPI for Statewide Impact
Working alongside Walter Moore and his team at NCDPI, John and Mary Beth helped conceptualize a new SQL query report designed to easily fetch student start dates. Mary Beth rigorously tested the initial builds and identified critical tweaks, such as refining the query to filter for relevant dates instead of pulling every historical record.
Thanks to this hands-on feedback and close collaboration:
NCDPI built, tested, and published the updated query into production.
The feature was integrated into the NC Student Audit Report under data validations in Infinite Campus.
School administrators state-wide now benefit from a streamlined process that saves hours of manual data entry and spreadsheet cross-referencing.
